Waldo de Vleeschauwer

Founder & CEO

With nearly 15 years' in buy-side private debt & equity experience across EMEA & Asia, Waldo has deep knowledge in structured trade and working capital finance, securitisation, loan syndications, origination, asset and portfolio management spanning multiple sectors, commodity groups and finance products. Prior to founding Artis, he co-founded Africa Merchant Capital’s Trade Finance business, where he was Managing Director and Chairman of the Credit Committee. He was formally Head of Structured Finance and Credit and GLI Finance and served on the board of Legion Trade Finance. He holds a B-tech (Honours) in Financial Information Systems from Cape Peninsula University of Technology. 

Ian Henderson

Chief Investment Officer

Ian has been involved in all aspects of international finance for over 30 years including banking, corporate finance, insurance and asset management. Ian has covered global and emerging markets in origination, structured trade & commodity finance, syndications, asset management & portfolio management, credit risk, asset valuation and asset recovery/ restructuring across all commodity groups, financial institutions  and industrial sectors. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa and the Islamic Finance Qualification.

Hugh Briggs

Non Executive Director

Hugh brings more than 25 years’ experience in private equity, principal investing and leverage finance to Artis. His previous roles include Head of Principal Investments and DCM at Macquarie Capital Europe, Head of Capital Markets at CVC Capital Partners, Investment Director at DB Capital / Mid Ocean Partners and also as a private investor. Hugh has closed over 50 high profile European private equity transactions, refinancing’s and restructurings, including TDC, Techem, Evonik, Sunrise, Jefferson Smurfit and Centre Parcs and sat on the Board of 12 Companies. Hugh brings a wealth of experience and senior relationships across private equity, banks, direct lenders and alternative credit providers

Colin Heritage

Non Executive Director

Colin is highly experienced in leading the rescheduling of distressed debt situations, and in the arrangement of structured trade finance transactions. He has over 30 years’ experience of structuring emerging market supplier and customer finance, funded by international trade finance banks, and risk mitigated via limited recourse facilities and sophisticated insurance products. He has strong negotiating and inter-personal skills which have facilitated an excellent track record in the arrangement of trade finance facilities and in the securing of recoveries. He has proven ability to identify solutions to complex multinational trade and finance situations and is experienced in coordinating multi–disciplinary teams including commercial, trading, legal and banking specialists.

Gary Lindsay

Non Executive Director

Gary joined Artis’ board as a N.E.D. during the latter half of 2020 and is also a voting member of the Investment Committee. He is a Senior Partner at TDR Capital. Prior to joining TDR, he worked at Citi and Bear Stearns in their respective M&A departments.

Gary received a Masters degree in Finance with distinction from the University of Strathclyde and a Masters degree in Chemistry, with first class honours, from the University of Edinburgh.

Grégoire Paepegaey

Non Executive Director

Grégoire joined Artis’ board as a N.E.D. during the latter half of 2020. He is an Investment Director at TDR Capital. Prior to joining TDR, he worked in private equity at Providence Equity and Mount Kellett Capital Management, and M&A at Goldman Sachs. Grégoire started his career as a junior adviser for technology, energy and telecommunications to French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Grégoire received a Masters degree in Finance from HEC Paris business school.

John O'Mulloy

Non Executive Director

John joined Chase Manhattan in 1978, where he founded the global trade finance team which soon had dedicated staff in every Chase branch across the world. He also established the first dedicated trade risk distribution network. In 1998 he moved to Standard Bank in a similar role for the next 20 years.  As a longstanding member of Credit and Country Risk committees he was responsible for leading complex bank and insurance syndicate restructuring and successful recoveries in Iceland, Argentina, ,Kenya, Sierra Leone, Mongolia and China. John studied PPE at New College Oxford and mastered in Middle East Politics and Development Economics at SOAS.

Peter Gubbins

Peter is co-founder and CEO of Global Trade Review (GTR), the world’s leader in global trade and trade finance intelligence, 

publishing, news and events. With over 25 years' experience in the financial media industry, he has taken a leading role in the strategy and execution of building GTR into the market leading media company in the trade finance industry. Peter is responsible for running the global business, which publishes GTR and runs over 20 conferences around the world, in venues such as Chicago, Mexico, London, Paris, Nairobi, Lagos, Cape Town, Dubai, Mumbai and Singapore. GTR has a proprietary network of over 25,000 decision makers in trade finance, treasury and insurance. 

Tim Horlick

Tim was formerly COO of Salomon Brothers International and a Director of Kleinwort Benson Limited. He subsequently founded a venture capital business focused on the technology market in 2000. Tim graduated with a degree in PPE from the University of Oxford and qualified as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse & Co.

Clint Walker

Portfolio Manager

Prior to Artis, Clint was a Transactor at Africa Merchant Capital, where he managed deal origination, structuring and performance. In addition, he has substantial experience in credit analyst and origination roles. Before commencing his finance career, Clint served in management roles facilitating the execution of major natural resource projects. Clint holds an MBA from EADA Business School and an Advanced Diploma in Civil & Structural Engineering from EIT. He has also completed Level 1 of the CFA program.

Harry Smith

VP Origination

Prior to joining Artis, Harry was a Portfolio Manager at RiverRock European Capital Partners. With over 10 years' experience in the sector, he worded as a commodity trader with Bunge, Export Trading Group and ASR Group in various locations before moving into Private Equity and Private Debt, with a particular focus on trade and real asset strategies. Harry holds a MBA from INSEAD and a MA (Hons) in Modern Languages from the University of Edinburgh. He is a fluent speaker of French, Spanish and Portuguese and has extensive international experience, particular in emerging markets

Dawn Seow

VP Origination

Dawn brings over 13 years' of experience in structured trade finance, treasury and banking with a particular focus on trade credit and political risk insurance.  Prior to joining Artis, Dawn served in key positions with Coface Singapore, Arthur J Gallagher, United Overseas Bank and Barclays Capital. She has previously worked with diverse groups of organisations across banks, insurance companies, alternative credit providers and corporates from various sectors. Dawn holds a Bachelor degree in Business (Hons) from The University of London.

Syed Hassan

VP Origination

Syed has over nineteen years' of experience in CIB with a particular focus on structured trade and commodity finance spanning South Asia, Middle East, Africa and Europe. He founded DE Deutsche EXIM Solutions, a Cologne based trade and project advisory firm, which focusses on structured commodity trade finance solutions in emerging markets & renewable power projects in South Asia. Prior to founding DEDEXIM, he held director and senior level positions at DF Deutsche Forfait, Habib Metropolitan Bank (subsidiary of Habib Bank AG Zurich), Dubai Islamic Bank and Bank Alfalah Limited.

Marc is a senior business development and strategy professional with 25 years of financial markets experience across a variety of industries. He was a Director and Head of Barak UK Limited. He joined Bunge’s Financial Services Group in 2011 as Global Head of Business Development. Before this Marc was Managing Director and Head of Institutional Sales for Benelux/France and Switzerland for Bank of America responsible for the distribution of High Yield and High Grade Bonds, Credit Derivatives, Structured Products and Tax trades.

Daniel Jackson

Head of Credit

Daniel brings 10 years’ credit experience to the business. Before joining the team, Daniel spent five years as a Lead Credit Analyst for GIB UK Asset Management, specifically in their Trade Finance strategy. Prior to this, Daniel spent four years working as a Senior Credit Analyst at Westpac Banking Corporation, where he was also a graduate earlier in his career. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance from the University of Otago, New Zealand.

David Lendon

Head of Operations

David brings over 40
years’ operations experience in financing of trade gained in banks, alternative lenders and trading companies. He has extensive experience heading up

Middle Office teams in London and Europe, specialising in risk and collateral management of both hard and soft commodities throughout the complete trade cycle from pre-shipment to receivable.

Andrew English

Trade Operations Manager

Andrew has 10 years’ experience within the banking space, having worked at
HSBC where he spent most of his time in Commodity and Structured Trade Finance. He has also been involved in a couple of start-up ventures within the tech space and has a particular interest in how blockchain technology is helping to bring trade finance into the 21st century. “Most recently, and prior to joining Artis, he worked as a consultant in the trade finance alternative credit fund space.”

Amrita Kundi

Portfolio Analyst

Amrita has 5 years’ experience working in commercial roles at IMI Plc, a FTSE listed Engineering firm. Following the completion of the global graduate leadership scheme, she moved into Commercial Project Management and Strategy Analyst roles in Europe and APAC. Amrita holds a Master’s with Merit in Risk Management & Financial Engineering from Imperial College London and an MEng (hons) in Civil Engineering from University College London. She has also completed Level 1 of the CFA program.

Sejal Ladwa

In-House Counsel

Sejal is a qualified solicitor and joined Artis in November 2020 and is responsible for managing the company’s legal affairs. Prior to joining Artis, Sejal worked as a banking and finance solicitor in both emerging and developed markets at Norton Rose Fulbright, which include United Kingdom, South Africa and Tanzania, and has a keen interest in trade and commodity financing.

Monika Csaki

Financial Controller

Prior to joining Artis Finance in 2020, Monika was Group Financial Controller for The Cambridge Strategy (Asset Management) Limited. She has broad experience of financial leadership in the financial services industry. She trained in a private accountancy practice.

Monika qualified as a Certified Accountant in 2013 and is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Monika has a first class degree in accounting and finance from Kingston University.

Natalie Rowe

Office Manager

Natalie is the Executive Assistant to each Director at Artis Finance.  As Office Manager, she is an integral part of the team in our London office. With responsibilities within our, Compliance, Accounting and KYC departments. Natalie has 15 years' experience across a number of different divisions and industries, this includes human resources, commercial, legal and operations
